It’s no surprise that the chances of car accidents increases during high traffic hours, rain and overall poor driving conditions, but when alcohol enters the picture, the likeliness of an auto accident occurring skyrockets. According to research conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the following times are considered to be the most dangerous for driving.
Christmas vacation – an average of 45 fatalities related to alcohol impairment while driving occurred each day. New Year Weekend – an average of 54 fatalities occurred because of an alcohol related auto accident. Thanksgiving Eve is the busiest day for most bars because social binge drinking is a common occurrence at this time.
Alcohol Related Accidents and Teen Drivers
The time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day are considered to be the most dangerous time for teen drivers and we are right around the corner from September! Most students are enjoying their summer vacation at this time and getting ready to go to school. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that about 5.8% of teens between 16 and 17 have reported driving under the influence of alcohol in 2010. The estimate for young adults between 18 and 20 was 15.1% in the same year. The U.S. Department of Transportation reports a total of 3,115 teens during the year of 2010.
